The year was 1587 when a group of around 115 English settlers embarked on a daring journey to Roanoke Island, just off the coast of present-day North Carolina. This ambitious expedition was the second attempt to establish a permanent English settlement in the New World after an earlier venture on Roanoke had failed.
Led by John White, the colonists were filled with hope and dreams of creating a thriving community in this untamed land. However, upon White's return to England for supplies, he faced delays due to the outbreak of the Anglo-Spanish War. By the time he finally returned to Roanoke in 1590, the colony had vanished without a trace.
The only clue left behind was the word "CROATOAN" carved into a wooden post, hinting at a possible relocation to nearby Croatoan Island. Despite extensive searches and investigations, the fate of the Lost Colony of Roanoke remains one of America's oldest unsolved mysteries.
